The Women’s International Study Center presents Cara Reichel & Peter Mills in conversation about their work. They will discuss the creative process of researching and bringing to life THE HELLO GIRLS, a new musical inspired by the true story of the first women to serve in the US Army during World War I. Learn about these groundbreaking women’s service as bi-lingual telephone operators in 1918, and their subsequent decades-long fights for recognition. Plus, enjoy hearing a song or two from the show!

A celebrated emerging lyricist, composer, and bookwriter, Peter Mills has been honored to receive the prestigious Kleban Prize for lyrics, the Cole Porter Award from ASCAP, and the Fred Ebb Award, among other recognitions of his work. He received Drama Desk nominations for his original score and orchestrations of THE PURSUIT OF PERSEPHONE. His shows been performed at regional venues across the United States, and internationally.  Mills’ musicals include ILLYRIA, based on Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” (licensed by Theatrical Rights Worldwide); THE UNDERCLASSMAN, based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel “This Side of Paradise”; THE ROCKAE, based on Euripides “The Bacchae”; GOLDEN BOY OF THE BLUE RIDGE, based on “Playboy of the Western World”, and others.  He wrote DEATH FOR FIVE VOICES, inspired by the life and work of Carlo Gesualdo, and developed through a prestigious 2015 Bogliasco Fellowship in Italy.  Most recently, he wrote music, lyrics and co-book for THE HELLO GIRLS, about the first women to serve in the US Army during WWI.  He has been a faculty member at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program, and at Princeton University’s Lewis Center for the Arts.  He wrote lyrics for the musical of THE HONEYMOONERS classic television show, which premiered at the Paper Mill Playhouse in October 2017.  pcmills.com
