About the Presentation
“Engineered for Greatness will be a book about Raye J. Montague, a “hidden figure” of the Navy. I interviewed her about her unique achievements in a male-dominated field. When she graduated high school in the 1950’s, minorities were not allowed to study engineering at the University of Arkansas. After graduation from college with a degree in business, Montague was hired as a civilian by the U. S. Navy as a clerk typist. Although she never received an engineering degree, she is credited with being the first person to design a naval ship on a computer, revolutionizing the design process for naval ships and submarines. Her work developing the CAD/CAM process is being used today in many areas of manufacturing from automobiles and dentistry to laptops and smart phones.“
About Shay Youngblood
Shay Youngblood is a Georgia born writer, visual artist, teacher and mentor. She is author of the novels Black Girl in Paris and Soul Kiss and collections of short fiction. Her published plays have been widely produced. She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards including a Pushcart Prize for fiction, a Lorraine Hansberry Playwriting Award, an Edward Albee honoree, several NAACP Theater Awards, an Astraea Writers’ Award for fiction and a New York Foundation for the Arts Sustained Achievement Award. Youngblood received her MFA in Playwriting from Brown University. She taught Creative Writing to faculty and graduate students at NYU and has been Visiting Writer in Residence at the University of Mississippi and Texas A&M Universities among others. In 2011, Shay was awarded a five month residency by the National Endowment for the Arts sponsored Japan-US Creative Artist Fellowship to conduct research on architecture and memory in Japan. The Women’s International Study Center thanks the Santa Fe Institute for its partnership and collaboration in producing this event.
About the Festival
On June 7th and 8th of 2018, the first annual InterPlanetary Festival will draw space enthusiasts from around the world for a two-day celebration of human ingenuity. The festival will transform the Railyard District in downtown Santa Fe with an expo showcasing innovation and technology for space exploration. Concurrent with the expo, participants can enjoy open-air concerts, maker spaces, lectures and panel discussions, a Sci-Fi film showcase, projects, art walks, talks, and installations, cosplay and gaming centered around InterPlanetary topics and citizen science.
